NPPA Night At Texas Christian University

FORT WORTH, TX (April 12, 2008) â€“ NPPA's Region 8 along with Texas
Christian University are presenting NPPA Night on Thursday, April 17,
2008, in the Photojournalism Gallery at TCU's Schieffer School of
Journalism.

The evening will feature the photographs of Alyssa Banta and her
project
La Ciudad de Fort Worth. There will be a reception for the exhibit
opening from 6 to 7 p.m., and Banta's presentation begins at 7 p.m.

A panel discussion about the future of still photography in journalism
during the age of convergence will follow. Panelists include Banta;
Robert Hart, the former director of online content at Belo Corporation;
Jerry Ward, of Canon Professional Markets; and Ian McVea, director of
photography for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

All events are free and open to the public.

My last meeting as president

Elections will be held on Monday March 31st for the new officers of the UNT NPPA Chapter. I hope everyone will attend. I have truly enjoyed being the president and getting this program started again. I believe it has the potential to help educate and lead the students of UNT. The Club needs someone with the time and energy to truly lead this group. I tried my best to build it and to let the members have a little fun.

Lisa Parisot is the Adviser and should be consulted if you plan on running for office. She has great ideas for the future of NPPA and has been a driving force behind it.

The first year of this chapter has been successful. In less than six months the membership has grown, we have discusses many topics and created relationships with other departments and clubs. The next set of officers will have to take it the next step.

As soon as they are elected I will step down and become a normal member, but I am always willing to help out.

All the best to my fellow students and to my adviser.

It’s in Austin and I guess it’s free. I really have no idea. I registered for it and it never had a price or asked for a credit card. If it’s free, I definitely in, and you should be too. Plus it sounds cool.

Meeting next week

We need to start planning our own conference. Parisot said she had been
 asking around to get some guest speakers.

Here is a basic agenda

Two days
 Day 1:
4 pm - Intro
4:30 pm - Opening speakers (I would love to have 2, one video and one
 still)
5:30 pm - Q&A and meet & greet
6:00 pm - break for dinner
7:30 pm - start sessions (I was hoping for one over video, & one over
 online journalism.)
9:00 pm - Closing remarks

Day two :
4:00 pm - start sessions (maybe get out and do some shooting and
 editing)
6:00 pm - break for dinner
7:00 pm - wrap up conference with keynote speaker

All of this is  ready to be changed, I just need to know what we will
 do and when. When is the big thing. We need to decide when to have this
 thing at next week's meeting.  

I was hoping to have it on Monday between  5:30 pm and 8:00 pm I'll get
 the time solid by Saturday. Let me know if they is a conflict.  Also, we need to have elections at the end of March for new leaders of
 NPPA. So get your politicin on.

About the Program

The Women in Photojournalism Conference has been traveling across the
country for the past 19 years.   We have a rich tradition of having

presentations to give your career a shot in the arm.  We have a proud

photography contest that has always had entries that are absolutely
impressive.  Each year, we have had over 900 entries for this contest.
The winners from the contest are displayed in our juried exhibit at a

I was a little late to the meeting today, so I will get with Jimmy and put the minutes up later this week. But, I did want to let you guys know that if you have a website or blog you want to link this site, send me the address and I will check it out and get it on the blog roll. I am not really looking for personal blogs that tell how you feel about the weather or weird websites. Just stuff that pertains to what we are doing with the organization. Portfolio sites are OK, and if you have a blog that you post you work on and talk about it, that is cool too. If you don’t have my e-mail address you can send the link to Jimmy and he will get it to me. I will have more info out this week about some of the happenings of the group.

Upcoming conference

Whitney Buster informed me that a photojournalism conference is in Fort Wort during the first weekend of March. Here is a link http://www.swpjc.org/index.html I will announce it during Tomorrow’s meeting as well.

Secondly, I was hoping to together with the officers sometime outside of the regular meeting time to nail down the rules and awards for the Photo and Video Competition.

NPPA Meeting Key Points 2/4:

Gallery Showings- Jimmy is going to get our application ready for the gallery showing. We decided that we are going to break the photo contest in to categories: Spot News, Sports, Feature, Illustrations, ect. Also we probably will allow abstract and other art photo photos as well. We are still trying to determine how we will submit Video and other electronic works as well. We need to find a few people to judge for us, I think that Lisa Parisot is going to take care of that for us. We are going to try and get winners published in the Daily. If there are any questions about that you can talk to the photo Editor at the Daily, Rebecca Evens.

Selling Our Work- We are going to set a website with a pay pal account so we can all try and sell our work. We will probably set something up to where, if you do sell you work through us, you will have to donate a certain amount back to the organization. Not much, but al least something so we can keep our finances going. We don’t get much from the school and we don’t charge member fees, so I think this is a pretty fair agreement.

Merging Clubs- Jonny Carroll, a member of the NPPA, has started a photography club here on campus, so we are thinking about doing some things with them so we can get more people involved. If you have any questions about you can find Jonny’s E-mail on the NT Daily website, feel free to get with him about the Photo Club. His is not a news organization, but just like our group anyone can join.

We are going to possibly offer some sort of seminar to get some more members. If anyone has any ideas please let us know. We need to really get this club off the ground. As Jimmy said, we have made this group active for the first time in 20 years, so lets do it right and make sure that the photogs and others have this group when we graduate. We had a great meeting this week. I think we had about twice the number of people as last week, so lets keep it up and invite more people to the meeting and see if we can’t break Jimmy’s pocketbook with food cost.

Benefits of Joining NPPA

After our meeting this afternoon I went home and thought about how we can manage a blog that will be beneficial to all of our members. I realize that we accept all journalism students into our group, as well as anyone else who wants to join, so how do we make sure that we are catering to the needs of the many rather than the few? If there any suggestions on how we can accomplish this feel free to let me know. If you are a writer and you feel that we are only dealing with photo issues, don’t be afraid to say something, we are all in this together and we all need to get something out of this organization.

I also wanted to talk about the benefits of joining the NPPA. For those who don’t know the National Press Photographers Association is an organization that offers photographers and other media types various services for membership. Students get an incredible discount on their membership fee’s, so now is the best time to join. Some other benefits include: job banks, critiques by professional journalists, equipment insurance, updates on seminars that are going on around the country and also a nifty magazine that has some pretty good pictures in it. The NPPA also sponsors competitions for photogs and video people. Although you don’t have to be a member of the NPPA to attend our meetings, we encourage you to become one.

We are going to be doing a lot of interesting things this semester; guest speakers, gallery showings and possibly trying to send some of our people to seminars. Our goal for the next meeting is 20. Everybody bring a friend. I have heard that if we hit 20 people we get fed at the meetings, so lets get a lot of people excited about this group and have a great semester.
